Angelina Jolie is a Goodwill Ambassador to the UN and, as you all know, she’s not the only celebrity doing her part. I recently learned that fashion icon Sarah Jessica Parker (aka Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw) is an Ambassador and spokesperson to UNICEF.
In the past, Sarah Jessica has participated in - and spread word about - the UNICEF trick-or-treating campaign. The campaign - which Sarah Jessica claims is one of her oldest memories - started in 1950 when a group of children in Philadelphia went trick-or-treating collected $17 to go towards victims of post-World War II Europe. Since then, the campaign has raised $132 million in the U.S. and $80.5 million in Canada. Some of the money raised from American Idol’s Give Back event also went to UNICEF.
Sarah Jessica explained, “UNICEF goes to the children that are most in peril, countries with man-made and nature-made crises, and changed lives.” Sarah’s own son, 4-year-old James, is a small part of the reason that she’s chosen to participate in this campaign again, as she wants to pass on the “American tradition of volunteerism, responsibility and commitment to others.”
Sarah Jessica also supported UNICEF by promoting their Cartier “LOVE” charity bracelet campaign, proceeds from which went to UNICEF. Sarah Jessica also lit the UNICEF snowflake to give a little a little light to the children of the world.
In 2004, after the Tsunami, Sarah Jessica designed a limited edition t-shirt for Gap to benefit UNICEF’s efforts of recovery and relief. Gap then donated $100,000 of the t-shirt sales back to UNICEF, and today, Gap is still raising money with t-shirts, but now the money is going towards the prevention of AIDS in Africa.
UNICEF’s goal is to change the world for children. They provide food, clothing, blankets, and vaccinations to children who are in need. For more information about UNICEF and what they do, visit their website at www.unicefusa.org.
