Matt Damon may have just won People Magazine’s Sexiest Man of the Year award, but he has more on his mind that his own good looks - and good thing, too. This incredibly attractive man has a good head on his shoulders and a good heart, too.
Matt is working with Live Planet Productions to produce a documentary called “Running the Sahara.” The film documents three runners who are running across the continent (Africa). Initially, that’s all it was going to be. But when he got there, he decided another project was in order: supplying Africa with clean water. He said he “saw firsthand the effects of one of the largest public health issues of our time - the world water crisis which is at its worst in Africa.”
So, Matt came up with H2O Africa, which is meant to raise awareness, money and support for clean water in Africa. Now, “Running the Sahara” will follow the runners, who will stop at areas that are in particular need of clean water. The film focuses on the human endurance of the runners, and the diversity in the six countries and numerous cultures run into along the Sahara, documenting the similarities in those cultures, namely their need for water. The film is designed to raise money to add wells to those particularly bad areas - and others as well.
The three runners are Charlie Engle of Summerfield, Kevin Lin of Taiwan, and Ray Zahab of Canada. The men will run 50 miles - or ten to twelve hours - a day for 80 days as they cross the Sahara Desert.
H2O Africa has several other projects as well, including putting a water purification system into a school or schools. This serves dual purposes: students have clean water, and parents will consider bringing their kids to school more seriously.
