When you look at those dresses the stars where to the different Awards Ceremonies, do you ever think to yourself: she could sell that thing and feed a small country for a week?
That is exactly what Keira Knightley did. She donated her 2006 Vera Wang (the gorgeous one-shouldered burgundy silk taffeta that she wore to the Oscars) to the Oxfam America’s charity auction. The money it raised - about $10,000 all went to Oxfam America to help end the drought in East Africa.
Keira said, “This is such an amazing dress and I am really pleased to be able to donate it to Oxfam. I have seen the TV reports on the horrendous drought in East Africa and I know how desperate things have become, so I am happy to be able to do something to help.” The money raised was able to go towards the East African food crisis appeal. With the $10,000 Oxfam could provide food to 500 children for one 30-day month.
Oxfam’s East Africa Director, Paul Smith-Lomas said, “Millions of people across Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Tanzania are at risk of starvation in one of the harshest droughts the region has ever faced… Young children are most at risk, and there are already reports of child deaths as a result of malnutrition.”
Oxfam America is a non-for-profit organization that strives to end global poverty through saving lives, helping overcome poverty, and ending social injustices. Oxfam is also on the scene during disasters and emergency situations, providing emergency assistance.

Keira also donated her gold Gucci dress (the one she wore to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” premiere) to charity.
