Hilary Swank has spent the last six months lovingly growing out her hair. Friday, November 2, 2007, the reason became clear, when, on the Oprah Winfrey show, she cut it off to donate it to “Pantene Beautiful Lengths” Campaign, which goes towards wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer. Pantene Beautiful Locks works similarly to “Locks of Love” in that those donating must donate at least eight inches. However, the Pantene campaign sees a bit more organized.
Hilary said, “As a woman who has seen friends and family battle cancer, I understand how deeply upsetting their loss of hair can be. I was overwhelmed by their need and wanted to help… That’s why I am partnering with Pantene to raise one million inches of hair to make free wigs. Pantene Beautiful Lengths truly letsus do something beautiful with our hair - give it to a woman who needs it more.”
According to a study performed by the Cancer Practice, about sixty percent of women think that hair loss is the worst of the potential side effects of cancer treatment. As Hilary said, “Eight percent won’t get their potentially life-saving treatment because they don’t want to lose their hair. I thought, ‘Here’s my hair. Cut it off. Save your life!’”
Pantene is donating these real hair wigs to women for free. In general, real-hair wigs cost around $1200, and health insurance only partially covers the cost.
One of the best part’s of Hilary’s donation is it inspired Harpo Studios to continue with the giving. They had a goal of making 100 people’s hair in 48 hours and donating it to Pantene.
Pantene’s current goal is to add up hair donations, eight inches by eight inches, until they reach one million inches. For more information, visit www.beautifullengths.com. Even those who don’t meet the requirements for donating their hair, or don’t want to donate their hair, can still do something. There are always ways to help.
