In this season of giving and thankfulness, it’s important to appreciate all those who give willingly of their time, like Angelina Jolie, their money, their belongings and their fame, like the actors and actresses who participated in Cinema Against Aids.
It seems that giving away dresses is a popular theme because Keira Knightley isn’t the only person who did it. Another person who gave of some of her belongings for a good cause is Halle Berry. A couple of years ago, she gave two of her designer gowns to her high school in Cleveland, Bedford High.
The dresses were then auctioned off during a prom fashion show to raise money for the students, so they could afford a field trip to the Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinatti. As the daughter of an African American man (and a white English woman), I’m sure this is an important part of her culture that she wanted those students to experience and understand. I’m sure it was equally important to her that the students got to have a field trip.
Halle’s fifth grade teacher and childhood role model, Yvonne Sims, who is currently one of the guidance counselor’s at the school, said that Halle “always said that if I need anything to let her know.” Clearly, Halle still looks up to her old teacher, and hasn’t let her fame go to her head. Instead, she’s doing what Colin Firth and other famous people encourage and live by, and is using her fame to help those less fortunate.
One of the dresses that Halle gave is a knee-length dress that she wore on the cover of Ebony Magazine, and the other is the white halter that she wore to a party debuting her HBO film, Lackawanna Blues.
Halle, who was a cheerleader, and popular in high school, is still popular and pretty - now one of Hollywood’s best-paid actresses. Halle has made previous donations of different articles of clothing, as well, including several suits (of her ex-husbands!) that she gave to a charity in Los Angeles.
