Emily Deschanel, who stars as Dr. Temperance Brennan in the popular NBC television show “Bones” tends to stay very low-profile, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t get involved. Emily supports several charities, including Farm Sanctuary, the Humane Society, PETA, Artists Take Action and Women for Women International.
Women for Women International was introduced to Emily Deschanel by someone she knows, Lisa Shannon. The program is designed to empower the women in the Congo who have survived the war and need help to become economically independent by training the women to earn a women and support their families. Women for Women International believes that once a woman can earn a living, she can train others and become an active citizen and participant in society.
Like other celebrities such as Colin Firth, Angelina Jolie and others, Emily believes in using her fame to raise awareness about different issues and causes. Even so, she said, “I hate the idea that people listen to a celebrity more than someone who has a normal job, but that’s the reality of our culture and I think one of the great gifts of having success in my business is the ability to reach a large number of people.”
To Emily, one of the most important parts of the Women To Women International charity is that the country restores dignity to women after it’s been taken away because of violence or war or some other traumatizing event. “I want to let these women know that we are aware of their struggles and that we want to help them get their lives back.”
If we each tells just a few people what they can do to change the lives of others, and each of those people tell just a few people, just imagine what we can do.
