Colin Firth, who has starred in several movies, including “Pride and Prejudice,” “Love Actually” the “Bridget Jones” films among others. Colin has encouraged celebrities for years to use their fame for good causes, and has himself participated in such non-profit organizations as Oxfam America.
Now, the famed, sexy actor is planning on opening and eco-friendly store, which he plans to simply call Eco, will be opening in West London, hopefully next month. The socially responsible actor had two other retail attempts; dealing in ethical-coffee cafes, one in Convent Garden and the other in Notting Hill.
Eco is an “ecological destination store” which sells “contemporary, artisan-made, ethical, Fairtrade and Eco goods.” It will also offer environmental services to help homeowners make their homes more energy efficient.
Surprisingly, Colin admits, “I’m no eco hero. I’m supporting the shop because I think it’s a good idea. If I’m in a position to say anything, it’s because I’m one of the culprits. I’m culpable because I’m a consumer. When you start to think about global warming, Western over-consumption, our energy wastage, it makes you want to improve the negative effects of your complicity in it.” He adds, “I prefer to do things, to get involved, put my money where my mouth is and learn along the way.”
Colin’s partner and brother-in-law, Nicola Giuggiolis, explained that his parents have been eco-conscious for years. He adds that he and Colin would like their store to be a place for people to meet and enjoy spending time with one another while learning how to improve the planet.
The building itself is self-sustainable, will be lit with garden solar lighting, the sun and wind turbines, has green roof insulation systems, is solar heated, and is clad in plants. The really cool part is you can go see, touch and feel those things, and learn how to do them yourself.
The shop isn’t just for what Nicola calls “eco-nutters,” but for everyone. It will sell natural paint and paper, bamboo computers, recycled pencils, solar mobile phones, and a whole bunch of other things.
Again, Ego is scheduled to open December 1 in West London. Happy shopping!
