The damages from recent wildfires in California have cost about 12 lives, 1500 homes, and a billion dollars. California and Orange County native, Gwen Stefani has decided to help the victims by donating the proceeds from her San Diego. Stefani intends to give the money to a local charity, the San Diego Foundation’s After-the-Fires Fund 2007, who will determine the best way to distribute the money.
On Monday during a radio interview, Stefani explained, “When I heard about the devastation of the fires, at first I felt I should cancel my show out of respect, but then it occurred to me that there might be a more useful solution.”
San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said, “We applaud the generosity of Gwen Stefani in dedicating her upcoming concert to support the San Diego Foundation’s After-The-Fire Fund 2007, which will help the foundation help San Diego… We thank Gwen Stefani and her fans for supporting the fire recovery and rebuilding across San Diego.”
Gwen Stefani isn’t the only one helping out. Former British soccer player, David Beckham, has also decided to pitch in. Beckham is joining the Los Angeles Galaxy for a fundraising match November 4, 2007. Other players on the L.A. Galaxy team include Anthony LaPaglia, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Costas Mandylor and some former world cup players. The team will be playing Hollywood United FC.
Mayor Sanders said, “I have been heartened by the many who have come forward to assist us in the fire relief effort.”
