Veterans Day, November 11, was celebrated this year on Monday, November 12, 2007. Angelina Jolie, well-known and recognized for her humanitarian works, pinned a bright red poppy to her coat in memory of the thousands of soldiers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Angelina has also added the Poppy Appeal to the list of charities she supports.
The Poppy Appeal is a British charity designed to remember the services of the servicemen. In 2006, the Poppy Appeal raised more than $50 million, and in 2007, they distributed 107,000 wreaths and sprays, and 800,000 Remembrance items.
Another man, Armand Young, is walking around across the country in an effort to promote human kindness and support of the troops in all parts of the world. He is also promoting the use of bamboo instead of wood to improve the environment. The bamboo pole he carries as he walks is filled with the signatures of others, who, like him, would like to promote those things. Among those signatures are such celebrities as Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Carrot Top, and several others.
“I’ve gotten about 35,000 signatures, about 200 of those are celebrities… The flags I carry are to show support of the troops and I’m getting signatures on those, too.” Young added, “I’m walking to show support for everyone who was connected to the 9/11 attack.”
Vice President Dick Cheney reminded us of those who have served. About twenty-five percent of the American public have served in some branch of the military, and are now Veterans. He continued, “We know them as our neighbors, friends, colleagues and family members. They make us proud to be Americans.”
Even though Veterans Day has passed, remember the Veterans today, and the freedoms they’ve fought for, and are still fighting for today. Your freedoms.
