“If you had the world’s attention for fifteen minutes, what story would you tell?”
Pangea Day is an event designed for the filmmakers of the world to answer just that question.
The Pangea Day movement, named for the super-continent that used to exist, is meant to inspire world peace, or even more specifically to “inspire understanding across cultures through film.” TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Conferences Curator says, “The whole day is in celebration of what it is that unites us.”
Today, we are separated by “borders, race, religion, and conflict but most of all by misunderstanding and mistrust.” The goal of Pangea Day is to go one step further towards breaking down the walls between us.The plan is for documentary filmmakers the world over to put together what will be a four-hour movie and air it on May 10, 2008 simultaneously. Bob Geldof and other film makers are already sending in projects for event. Pangea Day will be held in and aired in eight locations: Cairo, Jerusalem, Kigali, Ramallah, Rio De Janeiro, Dharamsala, New York and London, as well as on the internet, digital cameras, and cell phones.
Angelina Jolie, who has always been a concerned global citizen, regularly doing her part to aid and abet those less fortunate than herself, has recently decided to take part in “Pangea Day.” The 28-year-old actress is a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations, and puts her full support behind the event. Other celebrities and big names in addition to Angelina include humanitarians Meg Ryan, Cameron Diaz and Goldie Hawn, all of whom are also in full support of the world-uniting event.
Though the brains behind the event, Egyptian-American filmmaker Jehane Noujaim, admits that a film in and of itself won’t change anything, “the people who watch them can.
Jehane continued, “…Imagine if we had a day when millions of people across the globe came together in the dark, watching the same films, transported from their own worlds into the world of someone else, someone who breaks stereotypes and begins conversations.” In any case, her wise words opened the door to the event.
The deadline for submissions is January 15th.
