Known for her grace, her beauty, and her amazing films, 38-year-old Catherine Zeta-Jones is more than just a pretty face. The actress and her husband, Michael Douglas, spend a considerable amount of time and effort raising money for the new Children’s Hospital in Wales, Catherine’s native land.
An ambassador for the National Society For the Prevention Of Cruelty To Children, Catherine, mother of two, is the spearhead for the “Full Stop” Appeal, which intends to raise over $500 million in an effort to end cruelty to children. The children’s ward in the hospital is expected to cost around $40 million.
In August of 2005, while Catherine and Michael were visiting Catherine’s family in Wales, the couple played golf to raise money for the charity. Catherine was part of the European team, playing with Chris Evans, Boris Becker and Ronan Keating, and Michael played with the American team, including Robe Lowe and Haley Osment.
Each player chose one charity that would benefit from the game. Michael and Catherine obviously put their portion of the money towards the “Noah’s Ark Appeal”, going towards the first Children’s hospital in Wales. “Wales is still my home and I am delighted to be part of the NSPCC’s very important work across the country.”
In 2006, the couple returned for the “first official” opening of the children’s hospital. “We have a lot more work to do and more campaigning to do and I’m just very proud that we now have our designated children’s hospital in Wales - there are children who can have the best treatment and care, and it makes me very proud,” said Catherine.
The first phase has two 25-bed medical wards and a pediatric ward containing 16 beds. Catherine and Michael took the time to visit with one of the patients, eleven-year-old Ben Miles.
Sue Morgan, directorate manager of child health, said, “We are grateful to everyone to everyone who has supported the development from the start and are delighted that Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas have both taken the time to visit the wards today.”
Other celebrities involved in health-related issues are Jamie Lee Curtis - who is involved in in the Red Cross and AIDS awareness - and Mandy Moore - who is involved in the fight against breast cancer.
